ENL Department
The English as a New Language (ENL) Department at Amityville Memorial High School is dedicated to supporting multilingual learners as they develop the academic English skills necessary for success in school and beyond. Through purposeful instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, students build language proficiency while engaging with rigorous, grade-level content. ENL instruction values students’ linguistic and cultural backgrounds and encourages language development as a foundation for learning, communication, and self-expression.
The ENL Department is committed to equity, access, and inclusion for all students. Through collaboration with content-area teachers, ENL educators support students in developing critical thinking skills, participating in academic discourse, and meeting graduation requirements.

- Students who speak a language other than English at home may be screened using the NYSITELL to determine if ENL services are needed.
- Eligible students receive ENL instruction based on their English proficiency level, as required by New York State.
- English Language Learners take the NYSESLAT each spring to measure progress in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- Students exit the ENL program when they meet New York State English proficiency requirements.
- All ENL students work toward the same graduation requirements as their peers, with language support and accommodations as appropriate.
